In that case you probably got hit by "the XKB types/basic time warp bug".
(see <http://bugs.debian.org/251119>).

Can you still reproduce this problem with xlibs 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4?

-3 featured a fix for a whole passel of X keyboard problems.
