Have you tried these two together?

Oh, it does. :) Still, this is no surprise, as glxgears isn't very
geometry intensive.

MTRRs hardly matter for Radeon DRI BTW.

It's certainly much more likely to be upstream than Debian specific.

You could also try a DRI CVS snapshot, see
http://dri.sourceforge.net/snapshots/README.Debian .
