I will not be able to attempt to reproduce this problem until I am in a
position to run a 2.6.0 kernel.

Can anyone on the debian-x list (also receiving this message) attempt to
reproduce this?

I seriously doubt the X server is looking for and parsing the file
/usr/src/linux-2.6.0/Makefile on the system, so unless Mr. Andersen is
experiencing a coincidence (i.e., the server crashed for some other
reason that wasn't 100% deterministic, and him changing the Makefile
didn't actually have anything to do with it working again), what we're
probably looking for is some code that actually cares what version of
the Linux kernel is on the system.

Such code would probably be confined to
xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support.
