I just checked under both 2.6.0-test5 and 2.4.22: in both
cases 'mdetect -x' reports back PS/2, so that's not it.

That's okay -- my system is working, and I've learned more
about how X in Debian works, so I'm happy.  I see reporting
bugs as an obligation for Testing users; that is the only
reason I filed a report.  I figured if it happened to me it
would happen to others, but if nobody else is reporting
this...

I spoke with another Debian user today who also reconfigures
his X11 by hand -- he was very happy to learn about the new
md5sum procedure.
