Unfortunately, clients leaking resources wouldn't explain why the same
set of clients exhibits this problem under xfree86 4.3 but not in 4.2...
would it?

I've been trying to track this problem down for a long time, with no
luck. Since the only other people having it that I can find are also
running debian, I was interested in an easy way to install X minus all
the patches we use, but was unable to build debs of it. (I don't
currently have a system where I can safely install something as big as X
from upstream without using a package manager... just a matter of
reliability). If someone can suggest a clean way of installing X 4.3.0
without any patches, and still getting me a 99.9% reliable way of
reverting to debian packages, I'm more than willing to test this theory.
