I'm having difficulty replying to the newsgroup posting I originally posted to
debian-x, so I figured I would reply to you directly to keep you advised of the
progress with the issue I'm having. I decided to take the plunge, and blew away
X and KDE (and all the related conf files for other things like fontconfig and
whatnot), and re-installed X 4.3.0 from the previously mentioned repository, and
all is now well. I had some other debs from xlibmesa from 4.2.1 and 4.2.99.3
installed that I didn't know about, so maybe they were the cause. Anyways, I can
now switch virtual consoles without problem. I'm affected by a bug in the i830
driver that can cause X to crash when in a virtual console. A patch was released
after 4.3.0 was finalized that has been commited to CVS, but at least that
problem apparently has a solution, but I will end up re-rolling X to solve it.
Thanks for your help.
