Was this an installation within vmware?

Yes.  Actually the odds are that "PEXExtensionInit" has nothing to do
with it, but that something else is failing and neglected to issue a
message saying what was wrong.  Bad programmer, bad.

1) lspci
2) lspci -n
3) cat /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
