FYI -- I finally apt-get removed xserver-common and xserver-xfree86 and
reinstalled both.  That fixed things with regard to the segfault (can now
load glx and dri is enable when not running Xinerama.

Turns out it's the HAL module is what causes the video card to not
get reset correctly on exiting X11.  If the HAL module is loaded then on
exit I get the Out of Range display.

Otherwise seems to work ok.

Yep, that's needed when using the mga_drv from the Matrox site.
I'm not sure of the value of using the mga_drv from Matrox without the HAL
library, though.

Only complaint is that Tux in tuxracer looks more like Casper the Ghost
than a penguin.  He's very high contrast, but the rest of the scene looks
ok.

Hard to explain to my wife that it takes a big chunk of two days to get a
graphical interface working on a computer...
