Well, I'm not a big fan of having to reboot a machine to make a problem
go away.  That is far too much a "Windows"-style method of rectifying
problems.

However, in this case since the problem is corrupted hardware state --
registers or a hunk of RAM in the video card -- it is perhaps an
appropriate remedy.  To write a free software utility capable of really
doctoring an NVidia video card would probably require more in the way of
documentation that NVidia is willing to provide.
