My experience with Imake tells me that this is almost certainly not the
right fix; unfortunately, I am not sufficiently wizardly with it to
articulate why.

Perhaps it would be a good idea if you mailed xpert@xfree86.org,
explained the problem from first principles, and requested a solution.
David Dawes in particular has a fair amount of facility with Imake.
