And so it proved again.

They replied to my email with a list of 3 files that
they had touched on the restore CD, and where they
belonged.  Replacing those almost solved my problem.
Replacing those and telling Debian not to try to
maintain XF86Config-4 for me did the rest.

Replacing these is, of course, a hack to hold me until
XFree86 has official support.
