discover, read-edid, mdetect selection in base-config
One big fumble in 3.0 is that we didn't get things set up so the
automatic X setup can be easily done on new installs. That requires, I
understand, the discover, read-edid, and mdetect packages be installed
before X (xserver-xfree86?) is preconfigured. Thus a regular dependency
in some X thing won't do; a pre-dependency is not really right; and a
dependency is generally too strong a relation for these packages anyway.
But we want new users to get them by default.
Rob suggested to me that I try to modify base-config for 3.0r1 so that
it checks to see if X was selected in tasksel; if so it then asks apt to
install discover, read-edid, and mdetect (ignoring failure, since
they're not available on all arches, or something sane), before
installing the rest of the packages, which include X.
That doesn't quite take care of getting them onto the first CD though.
And it's a bunch of special purpose code I would like to avoid
maintaining, if there is any better way anyone can think of.
