Dumb question

My Xfree86 keyboard section has the following options:

Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
Option "XkbLayout" "pt"

This works fine. If I add this line:

Option "XkbVariant" "pc104"

my "Alt Gr" key doesn't work and I can't type @£§}{][....

Why does this happen?

And why does my meta key end up in the stupid windows key and not the Alt
like it used to?
