Probably irrelevant, but does show that the symlink pointing to
/etc/X11/app-defaults is dangling.

I used "apt-get install mozilla" to install the previously uninstalled
mozilla package. This automatically upgraded all x related packages
that it was dependent on. I had no control over the order in which
this was done.
