Okay, I will now be running the same test.

Actually, I've noticed in the way that the apt in woody successfully upgrades the
system without removing X. However, doing the upgrade using apt in
potato would fail.

Thus, doing 

# apt-get install apt dpkg
# apt-get dist-upgrade

before doing the upgrade would be successful, but just doing 

# apt-get dist-upgrade

will be quite unsuccessful :P (something to add to the release notes?)
