[exxcomm@hotmail.com: Resolution to: X not starting...high pitched monitor whine (OT?)]
[poor email etiquitte with the idea that this may help other users in
the future.]
*THIS* fixed your problem? Ok. This is strange.
Someone reported this to Branden a little while ago (I think before he
put X 4.0.1 into unstable) and some of us tried to replicate this
problem, but with no success.
You are the first to report a whine though, as far as I can remember;
the others just didn't get it to start.
So, to sum up -- Tim (aka whiskey sour) couldn't get his 4.0.1 to start,
and his monitor was making a whine at the same time. Most of us figured
it was being driven too far, but it turns out the font server listed was
causing the problem.
*sigh*
Thanks Tim :)

Dear Seth,
It seems that everything has finally fallen together and "clicked" to bring
X back. I'm sure that all suggestions from all sources had a part in the
resolution but the final barrier breached was:
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
<<snip>>
Section "Files"
# FontPath "unix/:7100" # local font server
# if the local font server has problems, we can fall back on these
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
<<snip>>
The suggestion (from the debian-user list)of the commenting of the
FontPath statement brought me back X. Thought you'd like to know to help out
the next unlucky bloke. I thank you for your patience and kind assistance! I
will try to honor this assistance by trying (in my limited means of
understanding....I am but an egg) to help others
as I have before in the manner I recieved my assistance! It seems that I
only relay the advice supplied to me for my situations though.
; ^ }~
Tim
