I'm using the 3.3.6 debs on this machine, but "xmessage -f /tmp/x.msg"
gives me an xmessage containing "-f /tmp/x.msg", while "xmessage -file
/tmp/x.msg" works as expected.

Perhaps you just need to spell out -file?
