Hello.

I am a system administrator.

For my projects, I use the Debian operating system.

I would really like to help develop this operating system.

Unfortunately, localization in Armenian is very bad.

I would like to help in translating a web page, documentation into Armenian.

Thanks for using Debian and for your interest in helping to improve the Armenian localisation.

There are several different localisation projects in Debian, but I would start with the Debian website or the Debian installer.

DEBIAN WEBSITE: LOCALISATION TO ARMENIAN

For the Debian website, we are prepared to serve Armenian translations, but as far as I know there is not active Armenian person(s) translating.

If you want to start with this, I'm happy to help (but I cannot proofread, I don't know Armenian). The website has two different type of resources to be translated: the wml files that will become the HTML files when built, and the .po files containing some strings that are used in many different pages.

This would be your translation dashboard:
https://www.debian.org/devel/website/stats/hy

and you can start with the "index.wml" file.

If you are familiarised with git, you may want to create a Salsa account, fork the whole website repo:
https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/webwml/
then clone locally, and compare the webwml/english/index.wml file with the webwml/armenian/index.wml file and update the translation, and then send us the updated file to the mailing list, or send a merge request via salsa.
More detailed information about this workflow here:
https://www.debian.org/devel/website/translating.en
and the translation dashboard includes a git command that can show you the specific parts that need update in that file:
https://www.debian.org/devel/website/stats/hy

If you are not familiarised with git and want to try a different approach, I would suggest to start with the .po files in that case.
If you go to
https://www.debian.org/devel/website/stats/hy#gettext
you will see the list of the .po files that need to be updated.
I would start with cdimage.hy.po, you can download it from here:

https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/webwml/tree/master/armenian/po

(click on the cdimage.hy.po and then click on the "download" icon (the one with the cloud and arrow).

In your computer, then update the file using any tool that handles .po files (Poedit, GTranslator...).

When the file is ready, send it to this mailing list and we'll review (that the syntax is ok) and upload.
Then you can go download other file, and repeat.

DEBIAN INSTALLER: LOCALISATION TO ARMENIAN

The Debian installer is translated using the "Weblate" translation system:

https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/debian-installer/

You would need to create an account there and start to translate.

If you need help with Weblate, please write to debian-i18n@lists.debian.org explaining the issues you're facing, and we'll provide support.

Don't hesitate to contact for any doubt or question you need, whether by mail (in the public lists debian-www@lists.debian.org for the website or debian-i18n@lists.debian.org for the debian installer translation) or by IRC in #debian-www or #debian-i18n. I'm part of the Debian Welcome Team and available to answer questions sent to my personal mail larjona@debian.org if you prefer to ask in private for any reason.

Welcome!
Kind regards,
