It's not the build system, it's broken input data. past_event template has

        <strong><langwhen/>:</strong>  <date/><br />

But this "date" variable isn't defined. We need something to copy what's
essentially already in events_common template

                if ($startdate && $enddate) {
                        $date = &daterange($startdate, $enddate);
                }

I'll leave details to Joey and whoever else handles this usually.
