To: submit@bugs.debian.org
X-Mailer: bug 3.2.9

Package: www.debian.org
Version: 20000503
Severity: wishlist

Here's a fairly typical scenario when searching for and installing
packages:

  Visit http://packages.debian.org/
        Actual URL: http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages
        Fill in the search form.
   *View the search results.
        Actual URL: http://cgi.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?<...>
        Select an interesting match.
*View the page of package information and dependencies.
        Actual URL: http://www.debian.org/Packages/<dist>/<pack>/<package>.html
Perhaps download some related packages, too. Then click Download.
**View the page of download locations.
        Actual URL: http://cgi.debian.org/cgi-bin/download.pl

All of the locations marked with *, but especially the one marked with
**, are ones where you are somewhat likely to want to perform a new
search instead of, or in addition to, proceeding down the path
outlined above. The last one more than the others is a situation where
you are likely to want to search again, because when you have
downloaded one package (in Netscape, you click one of the download
locations and the package is downloaded to your local disk), you might
have other packages (or search expressions) you want to search for
using the search form again.

You can bookmark the packages.debian.org page, of course, or
manipulate your browser to go back in its history and revisit that
page, but with many browsers this is not entirely something you can do
without moving your hand away from the keyboard and/or thinking about
how to do it.

Probably the whole package installation hoopla would be a lot easier
with something like debget and/or suitable apt guru options, but I
haven't had the time to investigate that. Anyway, even if there is a
good package for helping you with this, the web pages should not be
needlessly cumbersome to use.

Thanks in advance ...

I've added the link, thanks. Closing the bug with this message.
