Re: Rails Girls

Many thanks to Myriam for the heads-up.

First of all, may I congratulate Myriam and fellow volunteers at the first Rails Girls Galway - it was a very successful event with +60 enthusiastic and energetic female participants. One could hardly believe that there was a gender issue in free/open source software communities when seeing so many active women.

Just want to clarify that I did not co-found Debian women; I have been an observer of this group since its conception. This is a significant group - there are many interesting anecdotes on which one can draw when talking about social dynamics and gender issues in free/open source software communities. But, really, the honour and hard work of setting this group up and of keeping it going belong to Debian contributors and developers.

Small workshops working on developing small Debian patches (although targeting people with some programming experience, unlike Rails Girls) could be a good idea to attract more female developers in the Debian community, as well.

They deliver workshops and organize coding sessions to help women to
get programming ruby on rails. There's lots all over the place:

It seems it was born in Finland, but nowadays is global and non-profit
volunteer community. I think it's a very nice initiative to help women
in IT.
