I've had this problem many times, a program is holding the sound device.
This is caused usually because the program didn't terminate correctly
somehow. To free up your sound device follow these steps:

   1. lsof | grep <device>
   2. kill -9 pid

 Indecent proposal: Making a wrapper script to
all the media players doing exactly that.

 Yes, it's gross, but more often than not it is
what you want to do.
