Re: d-w wiki

Hi again all :)

My continuing efforts to translate the D-W wiki into Vietnamese...

On 29/05/2005, at 7:46 PM, Thierry Reding wrote:

The crumb trail is generated automatically and parses the filenames to create

I guess that'd be the better approach.

Yes, it certainly would. Thankyou for being willing to look into it for us.

The word "Vietnamese" is displayed correctly across the top in the
language list, but not yet in the right-hand sidebar, nor in the name
of the page (e.g. Vietnamese Homepage). Can I edit that?

Same goes for the page title (i.e. HomePage), which is takes from the
filename aswell and cannot be changed. I doubt it's possible to make it use something different for the page title, unless by changing the inner workings
of PmWiki.

:(

Also note that the sidebar that is currently used by the Vietnamese language is not the correct one. Only the first page has that sidebar, all language groups should use the one that English uses (with appropriate translation). You can edit the sidebar by browsing to `/Vietnamese/SideBar? action=edit'
directly (or browsing to `/Vietnamese/SideBar' and clicking the `edit'
button).

Thanks, Thierry.

My qs for today (so far):

1. Please see the offending Vietnamese character, as specified in the earlier email: it shows up as a black diamond with a question mark, and also inserts a line break there (always in the draft, often in the final copy). I have no idea why.

2. The ASCII wiki-links look terrible. :( It's interesting that external links can be in actual Vietnamese, but the internal ones can't. <moan>

3. Are there other ways of expressing "pmwiki.documentationindex." on the homepage? Is it a link?

4. Translating the Sidebar: the Vietnamese version is of course blank to start with, but I can't find the English version to translate. I tried English/Sidebar (nothing), then tried clicking on the "edit?" link in the sidebar (menu). Nothing. :(

5. I think I've finally got the link thing worked out. If I structure the internal links this way:

[[Group.PageName|Vietnamese name]]

then the page will still have the ASCII name, but the links will _look_ correct, so the reader will know where s/he is going. It's better than having horrible ASCII links breaking up the reading experience... but the page titles (v large headings) still look bad. Words without accents don't have the correct meaning for us.

6. Can we translate the editing buttons? Save, Edit, Preview etc.?

7. I've done a fair bit of work on it, but as you can see from this page:

http://women.alioth.debian.org/wiki/index.php/PmWiki/ QuyTacDinhDangVanBan

it's not going to be much use unless all the characters work.

I'm going to do some soothing .po translation...
