Re: Science fiction?

Debian hanger-on, all-around non-technical person.

I used to read boatloads of science fiction, and as far as I still read novels sometimes I do read some science fiction. I was a classic scifi fan (Heinlein, Leinster, Sheckley, Asimov, Clarke) and then I fell in love with Ballard. Later came Gibson and Sterling, then Stephenson. Greg Egan was a stopgap measure till Stross and Doctorow came along. And then I all but stopped reading fiction.

I watch practically all scifi that comes out, be it thoughty (Solaris) or braindeady (Riddick), good (Battlestar Galactica) or bad (Episode III). In huge spurts interspersed with bouts of non-watching activity.

I do agree that somehow literary and cinematographic scifi is, or has been up to now, an entry point into this scifi world we live in.

On Friday I met with two researchers working on "understanding gender

(many) things we discussed was whether the women involved in free
software projects tend to read as much science fiction as the
men. (They're interested in this from a point of view of "entry into
the free software world" and "identifying with the free software
community and culture.") I thought it'd be interesting to ask on here
-- do you read science fiction?
