For your convenience, I've implemented option c) below and pushed it to salsa. I chose that option because it is the easiest to override.

Please let me know if this solution is acceptable to you, and whether you would feel strongly against me (re-)uploading it for you.

Given that option a) didn't work out for over half a year,

I'd suggest to proceed with option b) or c).
