Yes, the maintainer is MIA, the package has been orphaned on 6th of
July 2011. See http://bugs.debian.org/632875 for the details.
The last two uploads (2010-Apr-09, 2009-Jul-03) were non-maintainer
uploads, anyway. See http://packages.qa.debian.org/w/wmaker.html for
details.
So we can and should ignore John's comment about working on packaging
the -crm branch... Nobody currently really cares about Windowmaker in
Debian.
So If you _do_ care about Windowmaker in Debian, you should change
that by stepping up and help getting the package back in shape,
probably by switching to the -crm branch as upstream project. (For

see http://bugs.debian.org/583734 for details.)

I think with the current situation, the best way is to adopt the
current wmaker package instead of creating an new package as this is
no more necessary
