 If there is not inotify patch in the kernel, fam can use polling:

 And AFAIK, Debian kernel has not such patch:

 No, I have not contacted him. And the problem with that patch is that I
don't know if building a module is enough, or it is a bit more
intrusive. If not, that could be done (but I'm not very keen of
maintaining a kernel patch)
