Yes, if there will be a volunteer to take the maintainership.
Preliminary packages exist and also on CTAN exist one from Peter
Szabo, but I guess Claire won't do it.

And I guess, the use of the lmodern package don't help you? So last
resort: put the cm-super fonts into your local texmf-tree. Yes, it is
more time-consuming than apt-get install, but not that hard to do.
