Hi Sean,

| i'm still not quite sure what these 'remote-' packages would provide
| that couldn't simply be represented in configuration files. as it
| stands now, dbconfig-common remembers the list of hosts used by
| other packages (or it did the last time i checked). this could be
| extended/rewritten such that dbconfig-common could provide a list
| of 'profiles' to use as optional starting points for preseeding
| the debconf responses for administrative credentials as well.

The main point of the remote-* packages is that they are a means to
depend on a database. Currently, you can depend on a database, which
hurts those users that want their database on another machine, or just
recommend one, which means that it's possible (likely) to install a
non-working web application.

Having a remote-postgresql or remote-mysql package allows a less
problematic solution to this problem. For a web application that wants
mysql, you can have a depends on mysql-server OR remote-mysql.

When you install a new web application that is being installed with a
remote-* database, you can either choose an existing configuration or
add a new one (similar to some of the dictionary packages - I think
aspell was mentioned)

This allows for the flexibility for a web server that is running a
number of applications talking to one or many different db servers.

I think this sounds good in theory, I'm not sure how hard it is to do in
practice.

These are just ideas at the moment of course, we (Martin Langhoff and I)
had planned to write something more solid up and email it to this list &
the relevant db maintainers for comment, but obviously some quick
explanation was required too :)

| if you're interested in helping on this front, or have other db related
| ideas, you're invited to join up on the alioth dbconfig-common mailing
| list, where most of the db-specific stuff is being discussed.

Yup, I'll do that, thanks.

Cheers!
Penny
