I'd gladly sponsor Benjamin if I knew that I don't have to do it
endlessly... right now I'm not motivated to help him fix such packages
because it imposes too much burden on me on the long term.

If I know that he can be DM on those packages after a while, then I'd be
ready to do it.

Right, he just tells you that there's no more incentive for him to send a
patch when his experience has been that patches are not integrated on
such orphaned packages.
