In a really fundamental way articles 1 and 5 of the Social Contract are
at odds with one and other. In this day and age it is clear that the act of
"distribution" is one that will be carried out electronically and not
physically. Since article 1 comes first and 5 comes last I think that it is
easy to see where the priorities of the contract lie. This seems to be a
hold-over from when FTP largely served to feed CD manufacturers who then
created a product for the general public. Removing non-free at that time
would have created a serious problem for people trying to get to that
software. With the advent of broadband, the growth of commercial Linux
software and other factors, article 5 looks more and more like an appendage.
Why should we make this difficult? Lets just have a vote on it without
special treatment.
