I just did two things.
1) I filed a bug report to Christian Marillat, the maintainer of
deb-multimedia.
2) In the meantime I followed the suggestion of a colleague and replaced
mplayer with mpv. Works like a charm.
Problem solved, I guess. Thanks everybody for your input.
