What kind of file system is on the USB drive?  Probably some variant
of FAT, yes?

FAT file systems don't have Unix permissions, so all of the files are
shown with the same made-up permissions.

mount(8) has a section labeled "Mount options for fat" with lots of
options you can specify when mounting the file system.  Take a look at
the "umask=" option for starters.
