removing execute permissions from a USB file

I feel like I'm missing something really basic, but I copied a bunch
of files off my Windows 10 machine to a USB drive. I'm trying to copy
some of those files to my Debian laptop & noticed all the files have
execute permissions .. which is no big deal but they're MP3 files
which aren't programs so it seems like they shouldn't have executable
file permission set. But how do I turn it off???

lee@an17 /media/lee/Windows10/2025_Sep_10/MyMusic
$ ls -l smoke-detector-1.mp3
-rwxr-xr-x 1 lee lee 323797 Dec 29  2020 smoke-detector-1.mp3

lee@an17 /media/lee/Windows10/2025_Sep_10/MyMusic
$ chmod -x smoke-detector-1.mp3
chmod: smoke-detector-1.mp3: new permissions are rw-r-xr-x, not rw-r--r--

lee@an17 /media/lee/Windows10/2025_Sep_10/MyMusic
$ chmod go-x smoke-detector-1.mp3

lee@an17 /media/lee/Windows10/2025_Sep_10/MyMusic
$ ls -l smoke-detector-1.mp3
-rwxr-xr-x 1 lee lee 323797 Dec 29  2020 smoke-detector-1.mp3

"chmod go-x /tmp/foo" works, so what's the problem with something on /media???

lee@an17 /tmp
$ ls -l foo
-rw-rwxrwx 1 lee lee 0 Nov 29 19:11 foo

lee@an17 /tmp
$ chmod go-x foo

lee@an17 /tmp
$ ls -l foo
-rw-rw-rw- 1 lee lee 0 Nov 29 19:11 foo

Thanks
Lee
