dpkg --print-architecture (userland)
This is the best answer, also
dpkg --print-foreign-architectures
to identify whether multiarch is configured.
Best only if the installed OS boots.
And if it doesn't boot what would be the purpose of knowing whether the
unbootable OS installed on the disk is 32 or 64 bit?
Whether there is any point to booting 64bit installation media for the purpose of
upgrading an installed system instead of attempting to install afresh. Systems
mothballed often were on account of no longer booting an installed OS.
