I hadn't realised that it was Gnome. The only Gnome dependency seems to
be one library. 

I use this and also the alacarte menu editor, the calculator and a
couple of games, and have Network Manager and Nautilus installed for
occasional use. I have about 30 Gnome components installed from a list
of over 300, which I don't think is too much of a burden. Obviously I
don't use the Gnome DE.
