but doesn't dist-upgrade apply the updates?

I just want to be notified about any updates that are available. I
don't want them being applied until after I review them.

KDE's Discover checks for updates daily and provides a system notification when updates are available. Discover will run on other desktops as well. Discover is also handy when you want even more good free stuff but are not sure what the package names are.

Can I install all of the desktop environments and switch between them as and when I like?
