Walk through your TV ("monitor") menu looking for an entry like "adjust" related to video input.

As Felix suggested, a DVI to HDMI adapter or a cable should allow to avoid the issue. I used an adapter to connect a laptop having VGA and HDMI outputs to an old monitor with DVI and VGA connectors. While analog input required regular autoajustment, digital connection just worked.

I hope, you do not need to edit Xorg config to add a video mode suitable for VGA.
