I agree that the problem does not affect any user data. However, it
reduces the reliability of the SMART data that the checksum covers, and
that is what I find disconcerting.

Right. And all the WD software available for downloads runs on one of
two operating systems, neither of which is Linux, which is what I have
on this computer. Do any bulk storage vendors offer their own
diagnostic software for Linux? (Rhetorical question)
