Hello all,
since my upgrade from fine running bookworm to trixie I am runing into several issues with X-Server. I am running NOT Wayland but Xorg (X11).
These issues appear on all windowmanagers I have installed (which are PLasma6, XFCE and LXQT), with more or less intensity.
First I thought it is an issue with plasma6, so I filed a bugreport to it (including a small video):
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=507771
but the more I am examining it, I believe, there is a problem with X at all.
The issues are for example a
1. long delay when X is starting
2. freezing or lagging for several seconds when starting an application like firefox or dolphin. (sometimes hard reboot required)
3. In Plasma application menu not working (see above bugreport)
ove
4. Minor thing: My usb-camera is always active (LED is on)
All these things let me believe, that something basic is not working correct. I made several tries to upgrade:
1. Restored the last working hardrive image of bookworm and then upgraded again = same issue
2. Created a new and fresh user = same issue
3. Deinstalled, purged and then reinstalled all X related packages = same issue
4. Reinstall ALL packages = same issue
5. Checked logs, tried configurations and lots more = no success
Now I am lost!
More information:
I discovered, when starting X as user "root", it is working fine, and also the plasma6-bug described above did not appear.
A quick new installation did also not show these issues, so I had the idea, that some bad libs or configurations left over during upgrade might cause this.
Another thing is: I have a desktop computer, with debian-trixie, too. After upgrade to trixie these issues appear on this computer, too.
However, they are not identical: Whilst the laptop is using the GPU from Whiskey-Lake-CPU (Intel) with kernel drivers, the desktop computer is using a NVidia-card with proprietrary drivers.
As both computers are showing similar symptoms after upgrade to trixie, I think, it is an Xserver related issue.
It is NOT a kernel issue, as this happens also with the old kernel.
What else? As I said, I am lost for now, but after the official release of trixie, many people will upgrade their systems.
We should have an eye on this, if my issues will appear more often in zthe future.
If someone knows a solution or can help or want me to test, whatever, I will be very happy!
Thank you for reading this! I will keep you informed, after I get a new harddrive next week.
Best regards
Hans
