Whatever location you navigate to in the pane opposite the file(s) you wish to
copy will be the location the copies will go. If you don't navigate anywhere in
that opposite pane, then the files will go in the directory containing your
XYZ.tar.xz source file.
The method works exactly the same with files in ordinary directories as it does
with files and directories in archives. This means if you wish to copy a directory
and all its content, you may strike F5 on the directory itself, resulting in a new
directory by same name as source on the target, which contains all the files in
the source within the directory copied.
This method has existed at least since Norton Commander for DOS was introduced
around 4 decades ago, long before the concepts of "folders" or "windows" were
applied to computers run on MS or PC DOS.
