     1. Can individual files or directories be extracted from XYZ.tar.xz ?

1: open mc (if not already installed: sudo apt install mc)
2: navigate to the location of XYZ.tar.xz
3: <ENTER>
4: navigate to the file(s) you wish extracted & select file/those you wish copied
5: <TAB>
6: navigate to the location you wish file(s) copied to if not to current location
7: <TAB>
8: F5

IOW, archive files are treated by mc as though they were ordinary directories.

I now more about my needs and [having done an initial read of other
replies] will rephrase my question.

XYZ.tar.xz is only file in current directory.
I have launched mc from the command line.
How do I extract from XYZ.tar.xz all files that originated in directory
/ABC/qrz/help to the current directory?

When you first open mc, both left and right panes have the same current directory
as it was when you opened mc. Once you have navigated into /ABC/qrz/help by

/ABC/qrz/help is a directory *ONLY* on another person's machine.
I had downloaded XYZ.tar.xz from a repository.
I wish to decompress it to obtain a local copy of only the files in /ABC/qrz/help for my local machine.

pressing ENTER, that pane's current directory is /ABC/qrz/help, where you can
select all regular files there contained by striking the * key. To select
individual files only, strike the INS key while desired file is highlighted. Once
highlights are as desired, strike F5 key, which will copy the selected files into
the other pane's original directory (/ABC/qrz/help).

Bingo?
