It depends on the system too. My amd64 based router doesn't have
microcode in the initramfs but that's OK since microcode is handled by
the BIOS (Coreboot). Also I think the microcode's not free to
distribute, the CPU on the router is fairly old AMD-for-embedded sort of
thing and unfortunately AMD doesn't much care about those. Or cares just
enough that some updates have come out for the various security issues
of recent years but not enough to make it clear it's free to distribute.
