As luck would have it, I just had an update for signal (5.40) waiting
for me. I saw no noticeable delay.
What is your sources.list for signal? I have:
root@hawk:~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.list
deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg] https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt xenial main
