Hello James,
Use Debian install media in rescue mode. Get yourself to a root prompt, text only. [As root/sudo].
Purge nouveau completely. Don't run either X or Wayland until you've completed
the next step. Maybe even purge Xorg.
Decide how you want to run: you can either continue with nouveau (perhaps)
or run nvidia binaries. If you need nvidia's proprietary binaries, you have the choice to run the Debian packaged ones / run the script from Nvidia's site.
If you have the choice, I advocate using the unofficial firmware .iso and
installing all prerequisites before downloading the Nvidia packages and _then_
installing nouveau. If you have a badly configured GUI you're stuck, so I also
suggest using text mode expert install.
