Hi Noah,

Did you install the laptop yourself? If so, did you set a password for root
during the install?

If you don't set a password for root / the password is blank, then the first
user created will normally be added to the sudo group.

Where you would normally use a root password, you then use sudo
In the case above, have you tried 

sudo apt-get 

The first time you use sudo in a session, you will be asked to confirm with
a user password. This then lasts for some time - 15 minutes?? - such that
you don't have to reinput the password for every command.
