Marco Is this at the desktop or a terminal? If desktop, try switching to a terminal (ctrl-alt-f1) and log in there. If successful, switch back to desktop (ctrl-alt-f7) and try again. I recall I had this happen to me last year. If terminal, then you haven't spent much download data/time and a re-install isn't much of a waste of effort.
