Thanks for the detailed response, I'll look into it.

My need for this is just a personal one-time use. I have a package that started to behave a bit strange so I want to reinstall it with all its dependencies just to be sure that nothing got corrupted over time. I was hoping  there would be a simple, easy way to do it but if not my plan was to purge the package and its dependences with aptitude's --purge-unused option and then just install it again as if it was new. I think this may be a simpler option for me.
