No. I ddn't use the tasksel command to select the Gnome desktop for installation. If I had done it, I'd have a bloated Gnome desktop environment.
On the console tty2, I installed the following packages:
xorg gnome-core gnome-tweak-tool synaptic gedit gdebi file-roller
In the past, after installing the above packages, I was able to boot into the bare Gnome desktop. I don't know why it doesn't work this time round.
