Results on speedtest.net are irrelevant for day-to-day usage. Try downloading some big files with compressed data. Your connection should max out around 50 MiB/s, so you have to download at least 500 MiB just to get it going. Another test you can do is to connect directly to your wife's laptop and transfer some big compressed file (e.g. a video or big archive) over SAMBA, NFS or FTP.
